Africa Centre for Energy and Mineral Policy (ACEMP) is partnering with Solidaridad East and Central Africa to implement some activities under the Reclaim Sustainability Project. ACEMP identifies with the strategic focus of the Reclaim Sustainability (Gold) Project that promotes responsible practices for natural resource management, decent work and labour conditions, CSO collaborations and dialogue on policy improvement and enhancing participation of women in mining, resilient and biodiversity sensitive mining as well as formalisation of Artisanal And Small scale Mining (ASM), amongst others.

ACEMP has since 2019 been implementing a three-year project funded by the Democratic Governance Facility (DGF) aimed at Promoting a transparent, organised, productive and compliant extractives sector in Uganda. This project seeks to enhance public participation in the exploitation of petroleum and mineral resources, as well as the generation, distribution and management of petroleum and mining revenues

With funding from the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa, ACEMP has since 2019 been implementing “The Karamoja Resource Protection, Governance and Development Initiative,” a project which seeks to create a balance between pastoralism, agriculture and mining in the Karamoja Region and create a situation where none of those particular economic activities takes precedence over another. It seeks to secure and protect Karamojong customary communal lands and agro-pastoral livelihoods, while promoting best practice in the governance of mineral resource development in the region

In an effort to formalise the Artisanal and Small scale Mining (ASM) sector in Uganda, ACEMP in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) /Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM) are implementing the Biometric Registration of Artisanal and Small scale Miners (BRASM) BRASM involves the collection of biometric information (face and fingerprints) of the miners along with their other details including the name, age, sex, location, mineral type, association membership, etc; and storing all this information in a central database that will be managed by DGSM. For one to be registered, he/she has to be a citizen of Uganda possessing a valid National Identity Card

ACEMP participated in a joint research by IUCN for a study to map out formal and informal mercury trades routes in Uganda with particular focus in identifying illicit trade routes, trade hubs and key players to enhance mercury governance within the ASGM sector. Visit IUCNNational Environment Management Authority (NEMA)
On behalf of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), ACEMP conducted “The National Overview of the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) Sector, Including Baseline Estimates of Mercury Use and Practices. The purpose of the study was to map out mercury use hotspots in the country, the level of mercury contamination in humans, plants, soil and water. Thereafter, ACEMP developed a National Action Plan for ASGM in Uganda on behalf of NEMA to outline strategies for the management of mercury in the ASGM sector and put in place specific, realistic and timebound strategies for the reduction and elimination of mercury use in the ASGM sector

ACEMP, on behalf of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) conducted a situational analysis of conflict in the Development Minerals sector as well as a diagnosis of existing judicial, non-judicial and traditional conflict management and grievance handling mechanisms and an analysis of latent and manifested stakeholder capacity gaps in management of safety, health and environment dynamics.
