Mineral-rich communities in Amudat and Nakapiririt districts have been sensitized on how best to protect their land, human rights and livelihoods in the face of heightened interest from investors venturing into the Karamoja sub region.
ACEMP promotes constructive engagement and dialogue between mining companies, local governments and host communities in mineral-rich lands to ensure that mineral development projects respect the rights of communities and neither cause nor escalate conflicts, particularly over communal land.
We concentrate our actions at the community and local government level, because we perceive that as the action arena where the communities stand to either gain from mineral exploitation or lose out and risk having mining operations disrupt their livelihoods.
Uganda is experiencing significant impacts of climate change, through increased frequency of extreme weather events like floods, heatwaves and drought. While there are some large scale mining and processing companies that are emitting significant amounts of solid and liquid waste, dust and greenhouse gases into the environment, the biggest polluter in Uganda’s mining sector remain the artisanal and small scale miners. Over 90% of mining activities in the country are attributed to artisanal and small-scale miners.
ACEMP aims to promote the emerging petroleum sector in Uganda to allow all stakeholders to participate in policy formulation, decision making and actual development of petroleum resources.
ACEMP provides a platform for mineral development value chain stakeholders from the mining industry, central government and local governments, parliament, civil society, the media, academia and host mining communities to engage each other and participate in policy dialogue that lays a foundation for the sustainable development of the mining sector.
